The Ireland Under-19s Women’s cricket team are currently in South Africa preparing for the inaugural ICC Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup, which takes place between the 14-29 of January. Here is what you need to know about the tournament.
The ICC are hoping that this new tournament will offer young women across the globe the chance to showcase their mettle and also help drive the growth and popularity of women’s cricket.

The format
This T20 competition feature 16 teams split into four groups of four. Eleven full-member nations, including Ireland, received automatic entry to the inaugural edition of the Under-19s Women’s T20 World Cup. The remaining five spots were filled by one team from each of the ICC’s five regions, through regional qualifying tournaments.
Ireland Women are in Group C along with New Zealand, West Indies, and Indonesia.
The top three from each group will progress to the Super Six round, where teams will be pooled into two groups of six. Group 1 will comprise the three teams each from Groups A and D, while Group 2 will have three teams each from Groups B and C.
The top two teams from each group will progress to the semi-finals which will both be played on 27 January at JB Marks Oval in Potchefstroom.
The final will take place at the same venue on 29 January.
