DUBLIN – Irish international Georgina Dempsey claimed four wickets in a devastating spell that effectively ended the Scorchers chances in the penultimate match of the Evoke Super 50 Cup at Malahide today.
When opener Lara Maritz (12) blasted the fifth ball of the match to the point boundary, it looked as though it was ‘game on’ as the last-placed Scorchers sought to upset the table-topping Typhoons under grey Dublin skies.
However, for the Scorchers that feelgood factor was soon lost as Dempsey (4-26) and Ava Canning (3-18) got to work. Bowling stump-to-stump lines, aided by both movement in the air and off the pitch, the Typhoons soon turned 20-1 in the 6th over into 38-7 in the 13th over.
While a 40-minute rain delay reduced the match to a 49 overs-a-side affair, the Scorchers batters had no response to Player of the Match Dempsey’s accurate seam bowling that also had enough pace to hurry the batters in their strokeplay. And there was no let up when a bowling change was eventually made with young pace bowler Alice Tector cleaned up the tail with 2-4 in 3.5 overs.
In reply, Georgia Atkinson (28) dealt exclusively in boundaries, striking seven fours from just 11 balls, as the Typhoons raced against the increasingly dark and stormy conditions. Needing not just the win but also a bonus point for the title, the side in blue achieved the target of 61 inside seven overs with, fittingly, captain Rebecca Stokell hitting the winning run.
