DUBLIN – A confident batting display by opener Sarah Forbes led the top-of-the-table Typhoons to a comfortable win over defending champions Scorchers at Railway Union Cricket Club today.
After losing the toss and being sent into bat first, the Scorchers started badly when the in-form Polly Inglis played on an in-swinger from Ava Canning and was back in the pavilion without disturbing the scorers. Christina Coulter Reilly (16) and Shauna Kavanagh (28) settled in for a patient 58-run partnership, but when Coulter Reilly was out chipping the ball to Canning at mid-on it preceded a middle-order collapse. Five wickets fell for 32 runs as Alice Tector (3-17) and Georgina Atkinson (3-20) made the in-roads – leaving the Scorchers at 97-6 in the 35th over.
Needing a late flourish to at least give the Scorchers bowling attack a chance to defend a total, Siuin Woods set about a late-overs counter-attack with 40* – her side finishing on 156-9. Woods’ eye-catching six over the deep mid-on boundary off Georgina Dempsey in the 50th over was a timely yet overdue first maximum of the innings. For the Typhoons, Tector and Atkinson may have taken the wickets, but Canning’s 10-over spell of 1-15 featured an incredible four maidens and contributed in no small part to the pressure being built on the batting side.
In reply, Sarah Forbes (60) and Atkinson (25) started confidently on a slow track, and while the Scorchers bowlers settled into their task well, wickets were hard to come by and the run chase began to gather momentum. Forbes’ half-century came from 86 balls as she set about trying to finish proceedings early. Player of the Match Forbes struck eight boundaries on the way to her highest score of the current campaign – while Robyn Searle began to accumulate runs with increasing ease at the other end.
Forbes’ dismissal, bowled by leg-spinner Coulter Reilly, didn’t stem the run flow and despite losing the further wicket of Alice Walsh (6), the Typhoons cruised to victory by seven wickets with 13.2 overs to spare.
